Sidewalk Frieze Patterns

Objective:                 To recognize a variety of geometric transformations and apply this knowledge by creating and identifying a frieze pattern.

Introduction:           A frieze pattern, or strip pattern, is a design that repeats itself along a straight line. Every frieze pattern can be mapped onto itself by a translation.  Some can also be mapped onto themselves by other transformations such as reflections and rotations. In this chapter you will explore transformational geometry and its applications.

Project:                     As part of the renovations at Six Flags over Loretto, the design department has decided to add a series of distinctive sidewalks.  Each team has been given a different sidewalk to design.  Each pavilion and ride has its own sidewalk pattern.  The center of the sidewalk is traditional concrete, although the concrete may be dyed the color of your choice.  A frieze pattern, designed or adapted by your team, is to be placed along the two outside edges. Your team needs to draw the design; the master craftsmen will duplicate your pattern using tiles.

Guidelines:  * You may work individually or in teams of two.

* Choose the pavilion or ride represented by your sidewalk.

* You will need to research the types of frieze patterns.  Read the project sections in your textbook (pages 137, 143, 150, 158, 171). Further research in the library or on the Internet will provide you with design ideas.

* The design is to be drawn, or glued, on poster board.  It must be at least as large as half of a standard sized poster board, but it must be no larger than a full sheet of poster board.

* The following information must be included with your poster:

* choice of pavilion or ride

* classification of frieze pattern

* identification of all types of transformations used

* reason why this particular frieze pattern was chosen or designed for this ride.

This information can be part of the poster or attached to the back of the poster.

* On the upper right hand corner staple a 3 x 5 card with your name(s) and the class period.

* Your grade for this project will be based on the following criteria:

* accuracy of frieze information

* neatness

* creativity

* following all directions
